This type of granite can be characterized by its colour, and in most cases the condition of the strikebands. Light gray with random white specks throughout the stone, blue hone granite stones predominantly have half moon shaped chips within its strikeband. Blue Hone granite is a very densely grained granite. Used in inserting stones, Blue Hone granite is the optimum material for repairing the running surfaces of pitted stones. If a curling club has Blue Hone granite stones, these stones can be reconditioned providing that the strikebands are in good condition. The same density that makes Blue Hone granite a great material for inserting also makes it undesirable when it comes to strikebands. Once Blue Hone granite stones have begun to chip, it is virtually irreparable. The chips are too deep resulting in a large amount of material that will need to be removed in order to get below the chips and return the stone to its proper convex shape. If your club’s stones are made of Blue Hone granite and the strikebands are beyond repair, contact our office and ask about trading them in towards a set of brand new Trefor granite curling stones. |
